OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that patients with inflammatory vasculitis, such as giant cell arteritis, are at increased risk for aortitis and aneurysms. Additionally, these patients are at increased risk of aortic dissections. The case report evaluated a patient who presented with acute on chronic aortic dissection in the setting of giant cell aortitis.
METHODS: This was a case report study at a single center institution
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: This case report describes a patient with rheumatoid arthritis who presented with ascending aortic aneurysm and acute on chronic aortic dissection. Most studies describe patients who present with aortic dissections, but those who present with acute on chronic dissections are not described. Screening for aneurysms should be considered in patients with autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
